 All about Year 1

This is a short guide to your child’s first term in Year 1.  We hope you find it useful.  Mrs Howells and Miss Maybee are the Year 1 teachers.  Your child will also be supported by our Learning Support Assistants, Mrs Hull and Mrs Smith.

During the year, your child will study a variety of themes that make links between different subjects including English, Maths, ICT, History, Geography, Art and Music.

Through these themes, the children will be encouraged to develop a range of skills including:

P- Problem solving

I – Investigating

T – Thinking

R- Reflecting

The children will have an outside PE session with external coach, Mark who will focus on improving the children’s fitness and gross motor skills.  The children will also have an indoor PE lesson each week focussing on apparatus and dance skills.  PE lessons are on a Friday.

Children should read their individual Oxford Reading Tree books every day. The children are also practicing to read and write the high frequency words from the Letters and Sounds document.

Spring term holiday project

This term the children will be really focusing on traditional tales.  For Homework, we would like the children to draw, write or make a model about their favourite book.  It can be a favourite book that your child reads over and over again or maybe it can be an opportunity to visit the library.

 Spring Term

  • English

This term the children will be learning about traditional tales. We will begin by looking at the well known story of The Gingerbread Man and compare this to other gingerbread stories. We will also look at another traditional tale, The Three Little Pigs. These stories will link in with our topic and science work on houses.

The children will be investigating the invention of electricity, sources of electricity and how it is used in our homes. The children will also be identifying the dangers of electricity and finding out how to make a simple circuit. To link in with The Three Little Pigs, they will be testing different materials and finding out their properties.

The children will be understanding simple algorithms through the use of Beebots and using iPads alongside their learning.

  • RE

Through the Parables from the Bible, children will be exploring the Christian beliefs.

Who Lives in a House Like This?

The children will be visiting their locality to observe the different types of houses and to find out what materials are used to build houses. They will also look at different sources to discuss how appliances have changed in the home. They will focus on the bedroom and chair paintings of Vincent Van Gogh and create their own paintings in a similar style.

  • Homework

As part of the study on Van Gogh we will be asking children to sketch their bedroom.
