EARLSDON ECHO
Following on from our successful community week, children in years 4, 5 and 6 worked with Earlsdon Echo to write a report of the week. Thjis article will be available in the February edition of the Echo. Copies of the magazine will be available each month from February from the school office price 30p each.
PIRATE DAY
20th January was designated as Pirate Day and children and staff were asked to come to school dressed as pirates for a donation of 50p. Games, a raffle and a cake sale were organised by the children Key Stage 2 who came up with pirate based themes – pin the eye patch on the pirate, a lucky dip with treasure slips marked with a cross if you were a lucky winner. We all had a great day and a total in excess of £320.00 was raised for the RNLI. Well done to everybody.
NAMING CLOTHES
Please, please, please would you remember to name ALL clothes worn by children in school. It is impossible to reunite lost property with the owner if there is not a name in it.
REGISTERING CHILDREN WHO START SCHOOL IN SEPTEMBER 2011
It is important that you register your child if the year are 5 years old between 1st September 2011 and 31st August 2012. Please do not assume that if you already have a child at Earlsdon School they will automatically qualify for a place. The correct form must be submitted to the council either by post or online.
BREAKTIME SNACKS
With healthy eating in mind we would ask you not to send in any unhealthy snacks eg biscuits, crisps, cakes etc. We are trying to encourage children to eat healthily and would ask that you send in only fruit for their breaks.
PLAS DOL-Y-MOCH
Our Year 6 children will be spending 5 days in Dol-y-Moch at the end of January. They will enjoy a number of outdoor sports to include, canoeing, orienteering, a beach scramble, rock pooling – all activities that they would not normally have the chance to do. They will have a fabulous time and we find that the experience instils confidence in the children.

Top Tips from your School Nurse
January 2011
Top Tips for lunchboxes
A balanced packed lunch should contain some starchy foods, get creative with some alternatives to sandwiches e.g. pitta parcels, wraps, naan, seeded batches, bagels or pasta/potato salad. The lunch should also contain protein foods, a dairy item and some vegetables or salad and a portion of fruit. More top tips from your school nurse or visit NHS choices on www.nhs.uk
Fruit and vegetables
Everybody including children should eat five or more servings of fruit or vegetables a day. A serving for a child is roughly what they can fit in the palm of their hand. Fruit and vegetables are a good source of vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre and contribute to a healthy heart, healthy weight and reduced chance of getting some cancers.
For more information visit: NHS choices on www.nhs.uk and click the Living Well Section or talk to your school nurse.
Activity
Did you know that children should be active for one hour a day? This can be on the playground at school, dancing, swimming, football, walking the dog or any other form of activity. This helps develop strong bones, muscle strength, flexibility and emotional well being.
For more information about activities and sports for children in Coventry contact your school nurse who will be able to send you a booklet or try www.activeplaces.com
Health Services
Did you know that your local pharmacy provides a wide range of family health advice, including help with medications and how to use them.
The Walk in Center at the Stoney Stanton site is open every day 8 am – 10 pm all year round and can provide treatment for minor injuries and minor illnesses.
The Accident and Emergency Department at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire is for emergency treatment of serious illnesses and injuries only. If your condition is minor, its more appropriate to use the Walk in Center.
If you haven’t got a GP try NHS Choices www.nhs.uk, or telephone 024 7624 6189 who can supply you with a list of local GP’s. |
